Kinja'd!!!

At this time of year, I expect diesel to be a bit higher due to heating oil demand.

But on my way to work this morning I saw a gas station where gas was at 65 cents/L... and diesel was at 95 cents/L.

So diesel in the Toronto area now costs almost 50% more than gasoline in some places now!!!

I bet at least a few diesel vehicle owners probably feel like they’re getting screwed over.

On the bright side, this ALSO means coal-rollers are getting screwed over.

It’s under a dollar a gallon in Oklahoma as we speak.

Fredlectek still claims a Tesla is “cheaper to operate”...  despite the Prius being well under two cents per mile to run on 99 cent gasoline.  Energy demand will stay depressed for awhile.  But, that means emissions are lower awhile longer as we wait for the grid to clean up.

“Fredlectek still claims a Tesla is “cheaper to operate”

It is and it isn’t.

If you only look at fuel as well as maintenance, it’s absolutely cheaper.

Or if you had a Model 3 and a Prius spec’d so they cost the same (entry level for the Tesla, fully loaded for the Prius with ALL dealer accessories... LOL), the Tesla would also be cheaper to operate

But if you include depreciation, a more expensive vehicle will cost more. But that’s true regardless of the type of vehicle.

And of course I haven’t discussed the difference in performance.

When you consider that, the Prius and Model 3 don’t compete with each other any more than the Prius competes with the BMW 3-series.

Factoring in performance and features, I would say the closest thing Toyota has that competes with the Model 3 would be the Lexus ES Hybrid... which costs about the same and doesn’t have as much of a performance gap with the Model 3 compared to the Prius.

But let’s get real... car buying is NOT about logic and reason most of the time. Most of the time people want a given vehicle because it’s what they like and/or what they want... for whatever reason.

The Prius is still a great vehicle... and the Tesla is also a great vehicle.

“Energy demand will stay depressed for awhile.”

I think in a month, we will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel and some time after that, restrictions will start to ease. And like after the crisis in 2008, things will bounce back. And there will definitely be pent-up demand for a lot of stuff.

“But, that means emissions are lower awhile longer as we wait for the grid to clean up.”

What we are also seeing is how much things can be improved in terms of pollution/emissions if it’s given a decent amount of effort.

I’m not saying we should keep businesses shut down. But I am saying that I think we absolutely can cut emissions hugely while still doing most of the things we are used to doing if we put some effort into it.

I also think the Aviation industry is the elephant in the room when it comes to pollution and emissions. The aviation industry has gotten too much of a free ride when it comes to emissions and pollution and it’s time to clamp down more the same way as was done in automotive for decades.

https://www.nationalobserver.com/2020/01/07/analysis/co2-jet-fuel-soaring-4-times-faster-what-can-save-day

Consider as well there is still leaded gasoline available for aviation use. And that’s just ridiculous.

Well look at it this way... by late spring , the price of diesel should be dropping too.
